River crossing, while shooting in Jericoacoara, Brazil

Gustav Schmiege III (b.1969, Haddonfield, NJ, United States) is an artist who has had "camera in hand" for 40 years. His fascination for wanderlust is well reflected in his work.  Gustav's commitment to clarity of content and his uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimalistic art governs his subtle approach.

Gustav’s work transcends the two-dimensional limitation of a page as a result of the inspiration he draws from various works of abstract expressionism. The depth and variety of his subjects pairs beautifully with the simplicity of the art itself. He proves with every piece that oftentimes the simplest works of art can have the greatest impact.

While shooting, Gustav investigates all dynamics, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on assumptions of what the viewer sees. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to stimulate the realms of our imagination. His work establishes a link between reality and conceptualization.

Gustav earned a BFA from the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. He currently travels the world, pursuing his passion for his personal imagery and on assignment for various clients. He lives in Heath, TX with his wife, Mary Beth and their pups, Comet and Jessica.
